There's a really good example of this in Brandon Sanderson's "Alloy of Law." Janice Hardy's "The Shifter" also has a character with magical abilities...but they're considered abnormal/broken.MKHutchinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07715686902529938959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-57396827816474840822012-03-05T06:23:55.784-08:002012-03-05T06:23:55.784-08:00Paul, I've been told that originally Superman&...Paul, I've been told that originally Superman's powers were supposed to be those of an alien accustomed to heavier gravity etc. (like John Carter), but clearly someone took them and ran with them, really really far. Batman, sure. I did find Iron Man relatively plausible. The ComicCon phenomenon taps into anime and a lot of other things. I do know those events draw a much younger crowd, and I'm sure they offer different things. Beyond that, I couldn't say.

Nicole, sounds interesting (sounds like magic)! I do think even when magic is involved it's worth making sure you're not dealing with superman. Her powers originated from birth, her environment is also her weakness...she was brought up in a small town to keep her humble, but it also keeps her naive and wishing to return to a simpler existence. Also, she has "dark" powers that she has become drawn to and fights against having them overcome her.

This does make me think though...how to avoid her become a superhero!Nicole Pyleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06920135146911951755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-9244864851421235352012-03-04T21:08:38.619-08:002012-03-04T21:08:38.619-08:00There's Superman, and oh my goodness, you mean...There's Superman, and oh my goodness, you mean "the rays of our yellow sun" are not sufficient explanation for his powers?

Then there's also Batman, who's physically fit but still an ordinary mortal. His 'powers' derive from flawless technological gadgets. Miniaturized and battery-powered, beyond all plausibility.
On the flip side, I'm told that the Iron Man movies are somewhat more realistic, as to the hero developing his fancy gadgetry.
(By the way, there's an excellent history book called "Tuxedo Park," by Jennet Conant, about the real-life Bruce Wayne, a financier and inventor named Alfred Loomis.)

Someone please tell me, why is it that ComicCon gets twenty times more attendees than any WorldCon? As a stickler for plausibility, while I applaud success, I'm not entirely satisfied by that aspect of reality.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-62917223495800142452012-03-04T19:38:07.172-08:002012-03-04T19:38:07.172-08:00I also find that people can have more realistic su...I also find that people can have more realistic superpowers if they are organized around something specific. For example, my antagonist has OCD and is a sociopath, which gives him lots of problems...but it also gives him a type of superpower that is quite plausible.Juliette Wadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02879627074920760712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-70546643367958723102012-03-04T19:01:11.811-08:002012-03-04T19:01:11.811-08:00Hmm...for some reason, Superhero Nation comes to ...Hmm...for some reason, Superhero Nation comes to mind.

Also, a part of what you're referring to is sometimes called Charles Atlas Superpower.
