In one case they suffered a cataclysmic disaster that wiped everything out, but most of the time it's not really stated. On the other hand, the novel I'm shopping around now demonstrates a very SF aspect to architecture, which is with colonies, the people making those original decisions, when they get beyond basic survival, may come from many different influences.
