Well, I was hoping to get in one more content post before my vacation started, but I'm afraid today is looking way too frantic. So I'll explain once more: I'm headed off to Europe, which I'm sure will give me lots of stories to tell you. Given that this is a family trip with lots of adventures in various locations, I can't count on being able to blog. At all. So I'm officially going on hiatus until September 1! I will miss you.
There is an outside chance that I may be able to post from one of my European locations, so you may get an unexpected bonus post, or possibly two; unfortunately I can't make any promises.
Thank you to all of you for your continued interest in TalkToYoUniverse. I still really enjoy blogging here and discussing things with you, and even after two whole years of posting, I still seem to be finding things to say!
See you on September 1.
Juliette

Announcements
Sorry to have to do this to my wonderful commenters, but I've just enabled comments moderation, because I've been targeted by spammers. I guess any mention of shoes invites the attention of the shoe-hawking community! Imagine.
It ends up being somewhat appropriate, though, because I have a big trip coming up. I'm taking my family to France, and rather than stress myself out trying to blog, I'm going to take a short hiatus from August 4th until September 1st. I'm trying to arrange some guest posts to appear during that time, and I hope I can find someone to moderate comments for me, because I certainly don't want to be comment-spammed when I'm traveling and not able to clean it up. In any case, I'll be keeping the comments moderation on until September 1st.
I do have a couple more posts to share with you before my departure, and and while I'm here I'll try to approve comments as quickly as possible. For those of you who may have been wondering, I don't sell shoes!
I hope you like my pretty Analog covers that I just added to the left bar, showing the magazines in which I've appeared.
Thank you for your patience.

Back from Chicago
For those of you who may have wondered, I wasn't blogging with my usual frequency because I've been on a trip to Chicago. I just got back today; it may take me a couple of days to resume my usual routine, but I'm happy to be back. I hope all of you are enjoying your summertime (or wintertime, for my SoHem friends...)!

My Debut at Science In My Fiction
Coming up on Friday I will have an article appearing at Science in my Fiction, the blog of Crossed Genres magazine. This is a great blog which talks about how to incorporate real science and scientific principles in writing fiction. Entries are written by a list of authors who have expertise in different scientific areas. The post is called "A Different Value: Nature" and I'll repost it here, but I'll let it appear first at the SIMF blog to tempt you over there. This blog is a great resource, so check it out!

New Anthology out from Panverse Publishing!
I'm happy to announce that Panverse One, the first anthology of novellas from Panverse Publishing, is now available! It's a beautiful volume, nice and hefty with five novellas for your reading enjoyment. For a glimpse of the anthology and samples from each story, go to the Panverse Publishing website, here.
Congratulations to Dario for this great achievement. I hope you all enjoy the fruits of his (and my friend Janice Hardy's) labors.

Blog News
Here are some updates...
First, great thanks to Ann Wilkes for a great interview of me. It's now up at Science Fiction and Other ODDysseys, here.
Second, my post on "How Morphology Can Help You!" - also known as how to make convincing plural endings and town names, etc. for your sf/f world - is up at SFWA.org.
Third, here's an announcement from Dave Steffen about the new nonfiction webzine he's starting, Diabolical Plots:
I'd like to announce a new speculative nonfiction zine entitled Diabolical Plots, that covers virtually every medium related to the genre from books to movies to video games. Edited by Anthony Sullivan and me (David Steffen), this site will feature regular content related to the craft of writing, including interviews and reviews. Past interviews include David Farland, Cat Rambo, KD Wentworth and, of course, Juliette Wade. Future interviews will include Jordan Lapp, Charles Coleman Finlay, and Tad Williams. As part of the grand opening, we're giving away a copy of Writers of the Future volume XXV to one of the people who visits the site and enters the contest before September 7th, 2009.

(Re-) Announcing the April Worldbuilding Workshop
April has well and truly begun, and I can now make this announcement with no fear of being taken for fooling.
Some of you may already know this, but for those who don't:
I will be hosting a free worldbuilding workshop on TalkToYoUniverse. Those who wish to participate should submit the following to me in my Comments area by April 10th:
1. A short piece, up to 500 words, which begins the main conflict of a story and demonstrates the world as it introduces readers to that world. Assume your reader has no prior information.
2. A 1-paragraph description of the main conflict of your story. If you have a query paragraph, that might work for this; if you don't, you might want to try writing one. Include: protagonist, setting, conflict, and something unique about the story.
As with the last workshop, I will be reviewing all comments before they are posted publicly, so your work will not automatically appear to public eyes. However, those who are selected to participate should expect their excerpts, questions, and comments to become public after a cursory inspection :-).
I will then post blog discussions and expect all participants to comment and push their worldbuilding forward. Because I will be "digging in" and being very involved in the work that is submitted, I will need to keep the number of participants to five.
If you are at all curious as to what "digging in" means, I encourage you to take a look at the discussions on the last worldbuilding workshop, which began December 7th of last year. The first post can be found here.

New Art!
Welcome to the new look of TalkToYoUniverse.
I'm very excited about these changes, because they make the blog feel like it's mine - yes, really, really mine. The logo you see repeated here is my own design, the "lily crest," executed in digital form by my good friend Alison Huff and inserted into the blog code by my beloved husband. Thank you both so, so much!
The lily crest comes from my Varin world, and is the Mark of honor that distinguishes members of the servant caste. For those of you who haven't read the sidebar page, the servant caste follows only the nobility and the officer caste in importance, and its members are highly educated, usually working as public servants, servants of the Courts, or personal assistants to the nobility.
Anyway, I hope you find it enjoyable to look at while you read. Eyeball-friendliness is very important to me! If you find my choice of new colors or fonts gives you readability problems, please do let me know.

Upcoming Worldbuilding Workshop
Thanks to everyone who replied to my poll. It seems like there's plenty of interest out there for a worldbuilding workshop, so I'll do one.
I'll post this again, but here's what I'll be looking for in submissions:
1. A short piece, up to 500 words, which begins the main conflict of a story and demonstrates the world as it introduces readers to that world.
2. A 1-paragraph description of the main conflict of your story. If you have a query paragraph, that might work for this; if you don't, you might want to try writing one. Include: protagonist, setting, conflict, and something unique about the story
Submissions will be due on April 10th.
I'll check back about this when the date gets closer!

Exciting News!
I'm over the moon this morning, and I thought I'd share.
I just sold my second story to Analog Magazine!!!
Cold Words is a story that features the point of view of an alien dealing with Humans. I built the world and the language from the ground up, so it would probably interest my visitors, and my workshop participants as well. I don't yet know when it will appear, but I'll certainly make an announcement here when I know more.
I've also been giving some thought to when I might run my Language Design workshop, for those of you who are interested. What with the holidays and my writing schedule, I think the beginning of February might be a good time for it. I'll keep you posted, and in the meantime, I'll be posting more musings and Ridiculously Close Looks as you've come to expect.
