I spent a lot of time thinking about it before I put it together; it's been an interesting process for me, and not without pitfalls. Definitely worthwhile, though. Good luck with your writing!Juliette Wadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02879627074920760712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-20610160077174528602010-07-15T18:09:34.763-07:002010-07-15T18:09:34.763-07:00Hi Juliette

Great piece, really speaks to me, since I'm starting to "put together my identity" as a writer.

I never thought about it as "changing" my identity, but now in hindsight that's true...and how frightening that can be when you attempt it later in life.

Thanks :)Amandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11052683734021511834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-50468578188061985832010-07-12T21:41:07.953-07:002010-07-12T21:41:07.953-07:00I think it was a couple years ago when I started f...I think it was a couple years ago when I started feeling like I was an actual writer. Obviously, I'd been writing so of course I was one by the act of doing, but I hadn't felt like I could claim the job title until then. There are still days and even some weeks where I know I'm a total slacker with my self-chosen work, but if I hadn't settled into that job title, I wouldn't be feeling guilt over my slackerhood. So, I'm still a writer.

Now I've gotta go crack the whip over myself and make me get back to work.Jaleh Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04942272578488986874noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-65196440354582051152010-07-12T14:25:08.189-07:002010-07-12T14:25:08.189-07:00If the editor read past the first sentence, they s...If the editor read past the first sentence, they shouldn't be considered a waste.

I was chuffed when a big market sent a personal rejection... and it was obvious they'd read the whole story, because the end was mentioned. It was still a rejection, but it's nice to know they didn't get bored after the first paragraph.Polenthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14029549865473069051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-51499576671609576452010-07-10T18:14:39.070-07:002010-07-10T18:14:39.070-07:00Thanks for the comment, Paul. It's a room full of professors, and I have a GED! But I still go, and make myself useful.

In the writing field, I suppose one major epiphany was sitting on a panel at BayCon. Just as much as seeing my name in Analog, there I was in a room full of interested people, having useful (and also enjoyable) give-and-take.
I used to get stage fright, and still do in flashes, but sure it's worth it, to really _be_ an author.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-38877700262393079212010-07-09T15:33:48.590-07:002010-07-09T15:33:48.590-07:00Thanks for the comments, Brad and ella144. Ella, ...Thanks for the comments, Brad and ella144. Ella, thanks for bringing up the distinction between writer and author. I didn't touch on it, but my own understanding is that the difference between the two is publication. I wanted to stick to a single term so I could share my observations (these are *not rules*) and not muddy terminology.Juliette Wadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02879627074920760712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-43404298381443237312010-07-09T11:02:01.929-07:002010-07-09T11:02:01.929-07:00I agree. Improving involves reading, learning from other writers, and accepting feedback.

Right now, I consider myself still at the apprentice level. I'm creating a writing habit and learning basics of the craft, but not nearly ready for publication. So while I'm a writer, I'm not yet an author.midnightbloomshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08936355677620232722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6320269312957801390.post-9468440358067372562010-07-09T09:51:22.347-07:002010-07-09T09:51:22.347-07:00Thank you for the insight.
