A link to a great point by Aliette de Bodard
My friend Aliette has an excellent point here. It has to do with things defined as "male" or "female" and how it's becoming all right for women to do "male" things, but "female" things are still denigrated and considered unimportant. I wish I had more time in my day to write at length about this topic! But for now I can send you her way.

Wow, most of the comments there are still pulling away from valuing domestic situations in stories. I prefer sentiment, domestic, and Important Things all mixed together. Too much domestic and I get bored. Too much sentiment and I get nauseated. Too much battle and I don't care.
ReplyDeleteMy mind is pulling me in so many directions on this subject that I almost don't want to comment for fear it will turn into a blog post! It's safe to say I appreciate your link; it's really got me thinking.
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed, to both of you. I'm currently writing a story that has both domestic and political sides, which are intertwined. And my male readers have been pleased with it! I think the idea of balance is definitely important, Jaleh. Sophia, I agree there's a lot to consider here.
