  1. The Literacy and Technology discussion sounds especially fascinating to me. As a student of history, I've learned that literacy levels varied greatly in the medieval and ancient world. Huge numbers of Romans were literate, and (among other things) happily writing vulgar graffiti on bathroom walls. But a few hundred years later a great king like Charlemagne, accounted as a very intelligent man by his contemporaries, struggled to learn to read and write into his later years. He came from a "dark age" culture where literacy was an unimportant skill for survival--yet he came to recognize its value in a more stable, more civilized society and strove to institute changes that would anchor written learning against the savage tides of history.
