Link: listen to real speech accents!
I found this link today, thanks to Jami Gold on Twitter. It's a website where you can go and listen to recordings of different speech accents. They have a terrific search page where you can specify the native language of the speaker, gender, place of birth, and age. You can even specify details about the accent itself! This is a fantastic resource for those working with dialects.

Hi Juliette,
ReplyDeleteIsn't that a great website? I found it when I was trying to track down a South African English accent. If I imagine the right lilt in my mind, it's easier for me to know the words the character would use.
BTW, the Twitter link for me isn't working, so I just thought I'd mention that I'm @JamiGold (www.twitter.com/JamiGold). :)
Hi, Jami. Thanks again for the link. When I click the link above, it seems to work for me, but thanks for the additional information. I appreciate your comment.
ReplyDeleteAnother great resource if you want North American dialect and accent help is this fantastic map: http://aschmann.net/AmEng/#SmallMapUnitedStates A tremendous amount of work has gone into it, and I find it amazing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link, Jessica! It's visually a bit brutal, but certainly a great collection.
